Dermatologic Disease and Wound Care

Incarcerated persons are often admitted to correctional settings with acute and chronic skin wounds that may have a variety of causes including chronic disease, a history of trauma or delayed access to medical care.  Once they are under the control of the justice system, correctional facilities have ethical and legal obligations to provide timely, evidence-based wound care to those individuals.  This presentation will discuss the types of wounds commonly seen in incarcerated persons, review basic wound care principles, discuss procedures for assessing and accurately documenting wounds, and explore strategies for managing wounds in secure and resource-limited settings.

Learning Objectives

Program Objectives:

  1. Describe the scope of wound care in correctional health
  2. Identify common wound types seen in incarcerated populations
  3. Review basic wound healing principles
  4. Discuss protocols for assessment, treatment, and documentation
  5. Explore strategies to manage wounds in a secure and resource-limited setting
